چکیده

38 children were assessed 22 months to 6 years after open heart surgery using circulatory arrest with deep hypothermia. The mean IQ of the group was 99.2 (SD 19.5). No correlation was found between IQ and the age or weight at operation or the duration of circulatory arrest. The results suggest that the technique gives effective protection to the brain during periods of circulatory arrest for up to 60 minutes.

Developmental progress after cardiac surgery in infancy using hypothermia and circulatory arrest.

Seventy-two of 76 long-term survivors who had surgical repair of congenital heart lesions at 11 days to 26 months of age using profound hypothermia and circulatory arrest underwent psychometric testing (Stanford-Binet) late postoperatively. The mean IQ of the 72 patients was 92.9 +r16.5 (SD). Stanford-Binet scores bore no relationship to the duration of circulatory arrest or other aspects of su...

Bleeding following deep hypothermia and circulatory arrest in children.

Deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (DHCA) is a technique of extracorporeal circulation commonly used in children with complex congenital heart defects undergoing surgical repairs. The use of profound cooling (20 degrees C) and complete cessation of circulation allow adequate exposure and correction of these complex lesions, with enhanced cerebral protection. However, the profound physiologic s...

Cerebral oxygenation during cardiopulmonary bypass.

Cerebral fractional oxygen extraction (FOE) was monitored in 30 children, using near infrared spectroscopy during cardiopulmonary bypass, to investigate the effect of hypothermia and circulatory arrest. One group of children (n = 15) underwent profound hypothermia with total circulatory arrest (n = 8) or continuous flow (n = 7). Another group (n = 15), of whom only one had circulatory arrest, u...

Use of profound hypothermia and circulatory arrest for the calcified aorta.

This case report discusses one method of dealing with the extensively calcified aorta in patients undergoing open heart surgery. Profound hypothermia and circulatory arrest was used in a patient undergoing aortic valve replacement with severe calcification of the ascending aorta and transverse arch. This patient recovered from surgery and was discharged from the hospital with no neurologic defi...
